MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Piedmont women's basketball team outlasted Maryville, 64-59, in another hard-fought road win on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by five points heading to the final quarter, the Lady Lions scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter to take control of the game and hold off the Scots late.
The win improves Piedmont to 4-0 in CCS play with all four victories coming away from Cave Arena.
Four Lady Lions scored in double figures led by 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from junior guard
LAKEN STILES. For the second time in the last three games,
COLBY REED provided scoring punch off the bench, with 15 points and three made three-pointers.
ASHLEY SCOTT also reached double figures, connecting on a team-best four three-pointers and tallying 15 points in the game.
Piedmont's leading scorer
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON was held without a field goal, but made 5-of-6 free throws, including four in a row in the fourth quarter as the Lions were in the midst of their furious rally. Washington also led the squad with five steals and nine total rebounds.
It was a slow start for the Piedmont offense, as the Scots scored the final five points of the first quarter to lead by five going into the second.
Although the scoring output increased to 17 in the second quarter, Maryville held steady and kept its five-point edge at the half.
The Scots scored the first points coming out of the break, but the Lady Lions bounced back with a quick 8-0 run to take their first lead since early in the first quarter. However, Maryville was undeterred, using multiple 5-0 scoring runs the rest of the quarter to still lead by five heading into the final 10 minutes.
Much as they have in the recent series history, the Lady Lions dominated the fourth quarter, as Scott's three-pointer opened the scoring in the final period and ignited the Piedmont rally. The Lady Lions led by as many as nine points with a layup from
DESTINY DEETZ with 4:44 remaining.
While the Scots were able to close the gap to 61-58 with 1:55 left, free throws from Washington and Stiles iced the game for the Lady Lions.
Up next, Piedmont will conclude its lengthy road trip with a critical showdown against Berea on the road tomorrow at 2 p.m.
