DANVILLE, Va. - The Piedmont volleyball team opened the 2022 campaign on the road in tournament action at Averett Friday dropping a pair of matches. The Lady Lions fell in straight sets to both opponents Meredith and Averett to open the year. 

Match 1: Meredith 3, Piedmont 0

The Lady Lions held tough against Meredith in the 2022 opener but the Avenging Angels came out on top 3-0. Piedmont dropped sets 25-19, 25-17, 25-21. 

Piedmont tallied the same number of kills as Meredith in the match but committed more errors than the Avenging Angels. JENNA ASH picked up where she left off as the sophomore led Piedmont with 13 kills, a team-high on the day. 

JIA WEATHERSBY picked up a pair of blocks as Piedmont had two total for the contest to Meredith's eight. TAYLOR HERRMANN led the way in digs with 16.

Match 2: Averett 3, Piedmont 0

Against the host Averett, Piedmont held tough in the first two sets before succombing to the Cougars. Averett took the match 25-19, 25-21, 25-10. 

Piedmont had just 20 kills to Averett's 40 in the match led by Ash with eight followed by HANNAH KATE CHADWELL with seven. BROOKLYN GUNN accounted for 17 assists, all but three of Piedmont's assists in the match. 

The Lady Lions ended with a negative attack percentage for the match after the third set against the Cougars. 

Up next, Piedmont returns to action Saturday in Danville facing William Peace and Roanoke.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--JENNA ASH led the team in both contests in total kills with 13 against Meredith and eight against Averett.
--BROOKLYN GUNN served as Piedmont's primary setter accumulating 37 assists across the six sets played Friday. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--The two opponents Piedmont faced Friday each tallied 20+ wins last season with only eight losses each in 2021.
