ROME, Ga. - The Piedmont men's tennis team closed out the 2022 campaign in the USA South Quarterfinals with a 6-3 loss to Southern Virginia Thursday.
The match marked the final competition for several seniors with
CHRIS BALE and
PATRICK DEMPSEY ending their careers on a high note with a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Lions were able to claim No. 3 doubles to trail 2-1 after doubles play as Bale and Dempsey won 8-4.
MIKE PORCELLI and
ROMAN WEBB hung tough at No. 2 doubles falling 8-2 while
ALBERTO NUNEZ and
JACKSON TRAYLOR fell 8-0 at No. 1.
Dempsey was able to knot the score a 2-2 after claiming a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 before Nunez (0-6, 0-6) and
BRYCE VANORDER (2-6, 0-6) dropped decisions at 1 & 2.
Trailing 4-2, the Knights were able to clinch at No. 4 as
CHRIS BALE fell 6-1, 6-1.
Porcelli picked up Piedmont's second singles' victory with a win in three sets by opponent retirement.
TURNING POINT:
--The Lions evened the score at 2-2 before the Knights went on to claim three straight in singles to clinch the match.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont's 16-6 record marks the most wins in a Piedmont season, breaking the previous mark from 2005.
