BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After an eighth inning rally on the road, the Piedmont University baseball team was topped by #3 Birmingham-Southern as the Panthers had their own eighth inning rally to claim a 7-6 win. The loss for the Lions marks the final midweek regular season game of the season.
Piedmont trailed by four after the first three innings as the Panthers scored three in the second and another in the third. Piedmont was not able to get on the board until the sixth inning when
ROBBY VASSALLO's bat came to life.
Vassallo singled up the middle to drive in
CONNER JELLEY and
KYLE CARLSON cutting the deficit in half. The Piedmont bullpen held the Panthers scoreless in the 4th-7th innings, long enough for Piedmont to claim the lead in the eighth.
Again, it was Vassallo who got the scoring started with another single to drive in Jelley and
JACKSON RANDOLPH followed that with a 2-RBI double to give Piedmont the lead 5-4.
ALEX GONZALEZ added another on a sac fly giving the Lions a two-run lead 6-4 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
The Panthers' bat's came alive in the bottom of the eighth though as they scored three runs on three hits and a pair of errors.
TYLER ROON entered to start the eighth and took the loss as BSC added a solo home run and a 2-RBI game-winning double down the right field line.
Up next, the Lions will travel to Maryville for the final weekend of conference competition beginning Friday.
TURNING POINT:
--A three run bottom of the eight sealed the win for BSC as Piedmont led 6-4 after the top half of the eighth inning.

ROBBY VASSALLO had a 2-for-4 night with three RBI with those marking his first RBI as a Piedmont Lion.
