Lady Lions Earn Split with 8-1 Afternoon Win Against Pfeiffer

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's tennis team earned a Sunday doubleheader split with a decisive 8-1 afternoon victory over Pfeiffer at the Burgen Tennis Courts.

After starting the day suffering their first loss of the season, a 9-0 defeat at the hands of NAIA Brenau, the Lady Lions bounced back with a dominant 8-1 triumph over the Falcons to move to 10-1 on the season.

Match 1: Brenau 9, Piedmont 0

Brenau had control from start-to-finish to begin the morning.

The Golden Tigers delivered decisive wins in doubles, winning 8-2, 8-2 and 8-0 across the board to head to singles action up 3-0.

Needing just two points to clinch the match in singles, Brenau quickly earned the five points it needed, winning all six lines and taking five of the six in straight sets.

Freshman ALYSSA MCSPADDEN was a bright spot for the Lady Lions, winning the first set, 6-3, at No. 2 before dropping the second, 6-1, and then losing 10-6 in a superbreaker.

Match 2: Piedmont 8, Pfeiffer 1

Back to playing against a Division III opponent, the Lady Lions returned to form, dominating doubles action and winning 5-of-6 singles line to reach double digit wins on the campaign.

The Lady Lions were nearly flawless across doubles, losing only one total game across the three matches. IMANI VINCENT and McSpadden were perfect at No. 1 while MAGGIE MOODY and MELISSA GISH also did not drop a game at 2.

Finally, the No. 3 team of RACHEL MARSH and DAKOTA WILKES rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles to move Piedmont within two points of clinching the match.

Singles play brought more Piedmont dominance with ABBEY GRACE VENHAM (No. 1) and Maron Sloyan (No. 3) each not dropping a game on their way to victories. 

Sophomore MELISSA GISH earned the clinch with a clinical performance at No. 2.

Fresh off breaking the school's all-time record for combined wins, Moody backed up a flawless doubles performance by a near flawless performance in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.

BROOK PATTON earned a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 while the Falcons earned a point with a third-set match breaker win at No. 5.

Up next, the Lady Lions will look to continue their outstanding play, with a home doubleheader against Belhaven (10 a.m.) and Oglethorpe (2 p.m.) next Saturday, March 12.

TURNING POINT:
- Piedmont took control of the Pfeiffer match by only losing one total game to take a 3-0 lead after doubles.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Vincent, Gish and Moody all picked up doubles and singles victories against the Falcons.
