DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Saturday, picking up wins in two different locations.

The Lady Lions split their squad on Saturday, with one group outlasting Savannah State, 5-2, on the road while another held the home court with an 8-1 triumph over Johnson & Wales (N.C.).

Match 1: Piedmont 5, Savannah State 2

Playing Division I rules against the Tigers, Piedmont raced out to a fantastic start, taking the doubles point by winning each of the three doubles lines.

MAGGIE MOODY and MELISSA GISH teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 1 while ABBEY GRACE VENHAM and DAKOTA WILKES won by the same margin at No. 2. Playing together for the first time this season, MIA VASHER and ALLISON DEMPSEY cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 3.

Needing just three points in singles to clinch the match, the Lady Lions dominated at the bottom of the singles lineup to earn the win.

Moody claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 while Dempsey delivered a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 and Vasher rolled 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

The top three singles matchups were closely contested, with the Tigers coming out on top in two of them (No. 1 and No. 3). However, playing No. 2, Gish emerged victorious by taking a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win in the third-set superbreaker to make it a 5-2 final.

Match 2: Piedmont 8, Johnson & Wales (N.C.) 1

Taking on Johnson & Wales for the second time this season, the Lady Lions improved to 13-1 on the season with a dominant Saturday afternoon win in Demorest.

The Lady Lions began the afternoon by taking two of the three doubles lines in dominant fashion. MARION SLOYAN and ALYSSA MCSPADDEN won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while RAILEY RICHARDSON and HOLLAN RABENSDORF also did not drop a game at No. 3.

The Wildcats fought hard and took a tiebreaker 7-4 at No. 2 doubles to make it 2-1 Piedmont heading into singles.

However, the Lady Lions immediately removed all doubt from the outcome with a dominant performance across all lines.

Overall, Piedmont only dropped five total games across the six matches.

Sloyan (6-0, 6-0) earned the clinch at No. 1 while McSpadden (6-0, 6-0) was also perfect at No. 2.

DANNIE EVANS (6-1, 6-0 at No. 4) and LEXIE WASHBURN (6-1, 6-0 at No. 6) each picked up their first singles wins of the season while BROOK PATTON moved to 3-0 in singles this season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Up next, the Lady Lions will have another split squad day next Wednesday, hosting Young Harris while taking on LaGrange on the road in a nonconference match.
