COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 14
th-ranked Piedmont University softball team suffered its fourth straight loss after a pair of defeats on Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, dropping the team to one game below .500.
The Lady Lions hit safely just seven times total over the course of two games on Saturday as the opposing pitchers for each No. 8 Salisbury and Randolph-Macon were at their respective bests.
Salisbury defeated Piedmont 4-2 behind a strong performance from Lindsey Windsor before the Lady Lions were shutout by Randolph-Macon's Gracie Ellis 7-0 in game two.
Game 1 – Salisbury 4, Piedmont 2
The two top-15 opponents played like it in the first game for both teams on Saturday. Piedmont's
MEGAN STEINMEYER and Salisbury's Lindsey Windsor took control and held the game scoreless through the first three innings.
Piedmont's first hit didn't come until the fourth inning, but that hit from
DREW GRAHAM was followed by another from
KARA TAYLOR that put both runners in scoring position.
MADISON HENRY followed with a hard-hit sac fly to center field to score Graham, which gave Piedmont a 1-0 lead. That lead wouldn't last long for the Lady Lions as a trio of hits, including an RBI triple from Maddison Lednum, in the bottom half put Salisbury ahead 2-1.
Salisbury added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, prompting a pitching change for Piedmont as Steinmeyer was replaced by
FAITH VENTO. Vento limited the damage thanks to an unconventional 6-5-3 double play.
After the double play, it looked like the Lions had a chance to shift momentum thanks to a leadoff single from
HANNAH SMITH. Smith ultimately scored thanks to a smart baserunning play on a groundout from Taylor, but that was all Piedmont count manage in the frame.
The Sea Gulls promptly added one more to their lead in in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single from Carly Galbraith, giving Salisbury a 4-2 lead heading to the seventh.
Windsor finished off her sixth win of the season with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh. Windsor allowed just four hits and two earned runs despite striking out just two Piedmont hitters as her defense aided her winning efforts.
Game 2 – Randolph-Macon 7, Piedmont 0
The pitching only got better for the Piedmont opponents in game two as Randolph-Macon's Gracie Ellis stormed her way to her sixth win of the year. Ellis went the distance and allowed just three hits while striking out 15 Piedmont hitters in the game.
Ellis helped her own cause early as she singled in her first at-bat to score Olivia Owens, who reached via an error, to give herself a one-run lead before she even took to the circle.
The Yellow Jackets couldn't get much else going against Piedmont starter
EMMA MCBRAYER until the fifth inning as the game stayed at the 1-0 margin. In the fifth, Randolph-Macon hung three runs on the board to extend the lead, with the last RBI hit coming from Ellis.
Ellis and her teammates struck for three more runs again in the seventh to put the finishing touches on their eighth win of the season. Ellis finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.
Piedmont's top four in the batting order for game two went a combined 0-for-12 with nine strikeouts as the team's three hits came from the seventh hitter
LYNDZI PARTLOW, ninth hitter
HANNAH SMITH, and mid-game substitute
KENNEDY VOTAVA.
