COLUMBUS, Ga. – Piedmont University's softball ended a difficult weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with an exhilarating win as the 14
th-ranked Lady Lions down the 6
th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State Warriors to earn a split on their final day in Columbus.
Piedmont came up just short against No. 1 DePauw as the Tigers escaped with a 2-1 win before the Lady Lions overcame a 3-0 deficit to take down No. 6 Eastern Connecticut State by a score of 6-3.
Game 1 – DePauw 2, Piedmont 1
Leadoff hitter
REBEKAH STEGMAYER got Piedmont on the board first as she turned on a pitch and laced it to deep right field. The Tigers had vacated right field as part of a shift, allowing Stegmayer to sprint all the way around for an inside-the-park home run.
That leadoff homer turned out to be the only run for Piedmont in the contest and the only scoring play for either side until the top of the fifth inning.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Drew Bratcher doubled to left to score Goose Moore to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, the pinch-runner Yasmin McClellan scored what would be the game-winning run on a squeeze play as she just beat the tag at home after a bunt from Brooke Bruin.
Those two runs were the only blemish for Piedmont starter
MARTINA MALOCH who would get saddled with a tough loss after allowing just five hits and one earned run in the game.
Maloch was outdueled by DePauw's Cami Henry as Henry struck out 11 Piedmont hitters in the game while allowing just six hits and the one run on Stegmayer's inside-the-park homer.
Game 2 – Piedmont 6, E-Conn. State 3
The Lady Lions found themselves behind yet again in their final game of the weekend as the Warriors opened the scoring with a two-run home run from Julia SanGiovanni.
Piedmont threatened in the second inning but would up leaving a pair of runners stranded in scoring position. Two innings later the Warriors added a third run to their lead when Brooke Matyasovsky scored on a 1-6-3 double play turned by the Lions.
The Lions finally broke through with a pair of runs in the next half inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the inning,
HEARTLY NEPVEUX scored on a throwing error after a single from
MADISON HENRY. Pinch-runner
HANNAH CALLAWAY later scored on an RBI single from
LYNDZI PARTLOW for the second run of the inning.
Piedmont looked to have tied the game briefly during the inning when
REBEKAH STEGMAYER singled to left field, but she was called out for making contact with the ball while out of the batter's box.
With time running out on the Lady Lions, Piedmont put two runners on base top start the sixth inning. Pinch-runner
JENNA BROACH would tie the game at 3-3 on a passed ball, which set up an interesting scenario for both teams.
Due to travel and flight scheduling, the game had an agreed-upon 5:50 p.m. "drop dead" time in place, meaning the game could not continue past that time.
After the Lions tied the game, a bunt single from
KENNEDY VOTAVA gave Piedmont a 4-3 lead. However, the sixth inning would have to be completed in its entirety for the inning and the runs to count, meaning Piedmont had to finish their top half and then get the Warriors out in the sixth before 5:50 p.m.
Stegmayer and
DREW GRAHAM would add RBI groundouts to the frame before the Warriors, who seemed content on slowing the pace of play by just a touch, would come up to the plate at 5:45 p.m.
Piedmont's
MEGAN STEINMEYER got the first two batters out quickly but allowed Alexis Michon to reach on an error. Just as the clock was hitting 5:50, Steinmeyer got Sophia Vilchez to strike out to end the game and end Piedmont's five-game losing skid with a come-from-behind victory.
Steinmeyer earned the win after allowing just three earned runs and striking out four Warrior hitters in the game.
