COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 14th-ranked Lady Lions didn't have their A-games with them on day one of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday afternoon as Piedmont University's softball team dropped a pair of games to Pomona-Pitzer and Transylvania.

Piedmont totaled eight errors on the day, four in each game, leading to a difficult day on the diamonds at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia. The Lady Lions fell 3-2 to Pomona-Pitzer in game one, and saw a late rally fall short in a 6-5 loss to Transylvania to end the day.

The Lady Lions allowed nine runs total on Friday, but only two would be earned.

Game 1 – Pomona-Pitzer 3, Piedmont 2

Defense hurt Piedmont in the first game on Friday afternoon as four errors ultimately led to all three of the Sagehens' runs. In the first inning alone, Devin Waddel and Megan Otsuka each reached on errors to start the game before scoring on a two-RBI double from Hannah Brajk to put Piedmont in a hole early.

As they have many times already in the young season, Piedmont responded to a bad inning with some offense of its own as three singles, the third of which resulted in an RBI for LAUREN ENGLISH, brought MADISON HENRY home to cut the lead in half.

English struck again in the top of the fourth inning when her infield single to the right side scored pinch-runner HANNAH CALLAWAY to tie the game up at 2-2.

The Lady Lions had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the fifth as the first two batters reached safely. KARA TAYLOR attempted a suicide squeeze, but the Sagehens were able to cut down REBEKAH STEGMAYER at the plate.

DREW GRAHAM and Taylor wound up getting stranded after EMMA MCBRAYER grounded out hard to third and Henry lined out to first.

After the defense got the Sagehens out of a jam, momentum went back on their side as they scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth when Waddel, who doubled to start the inning, scored on an error when Henry's back-pick attempt at third got past English and rolled into left field.

The error was Piedmont's fourth and gave the Sagehens their third unearned run of the game.

Waddel earned the win for Pomona-Pitzer after throwing all seven innings while striking out five and allowing just two earned runs. Piedmont's MEGAN STEINMEYER was saddled with a loss despite not allowing an earned run in her six innings. She also struck out five and allowed just three hits.

Game 2 – Transylvania 6, Piedmont 5

Transylvania and Piedmont went back-and-forth in the early going as both teams entered the game eyeing their first win at the classic. A pair of hits led to a run in top of the first for the Pioneers, but the Lions did the same in the bottom half as MADISON HENRY doubled to score KARA TAYLOR and even the game at 1-1.

The Lady Lions took the lead the next inning as a sac bunt from TAYLOR BUCKNER helped set up an RBI single from REBEKAH STEGMAYER that scored HANNAH SMITH.

That Piedmont lead was short-lived as a three-base error aided the Pioneers in evening the score the next half inning on an RBI groundout from Kadi Weaver.

That error proved costly for the Lions, as did two more in the next frame as the Pioneers scored four runs on four hits and two errors in the fourth inning to blow the game open.

After the fourth, Piedmont starter MARTINA MALOCH was replaced by EMMA MCBRAYER, who settled things down for the Lions and allowed just one hit in the final three innings.

McBrayer holding serve gave the Lions a chance to rally in the bottom of the seventh. After an error kept the inning alive, Henry doubled for the second time in the game to score DREW GRAHAM and Taylor to cut the deficit in half.

Another error allowed HANNAH CALLAWAY to score and bring Piedmont to within one, but Carlee Jeter got LAUREN ENGLISH to strikeout to end the game as Jeter clung on to her third win of the season.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- LAUREN ENGLISH singled in each of her first two at bats in game one, delivering both of Piedmont's RBIs in the game.
- MADISON HENRY went 3-for-6 total on the day with a run scored in game one and a pair of doubles and three RBIs in game two.

UP NEXT:
- Piedmont plays No. 8 Salisbury at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, March 5, to start day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Lions also play Randolph-Macon at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
