NEED TO KNOW:
Score: (#14) Piedmont 2, Greensboro 1
Records: Piedmont 6-3; Greensboro 4-1
RALEIGH, N.C. – In their third game of the day, the 14
th-ranked Piedmont University Lady Lions pulled off a gritty come-from-behind victory to end their stint at the Grand Slam Triangle Softball Classic on a high note.
Piedmont added a game with Greensboro College late on Saturday as the threat of inclement weather cancelled all games scheduled for Sunday, and the night cap on Saturday did not disappoint as the Lions outlasted the Greensboro Pride 2-1 in an extra-inning affair.
Piedmont's
MEGAN STEINMEYER and Greensboro's Cheyanne Cox engaged in a pitcher's duel for the ages as the two USA South representatives went toe-to-toe all the way into extra innings on Saturday night.
Both pitchers went the complete eight-inning game with their only blemishes in regulation being solo home runs at various points in the game. Steinmeyer allowed a solo homer to the Pride's Kailey Walker in the fourth inning to give Greensboro the lead for much of the contest, but one run wouldn't be enough for the Pride.
Cox nearly got out of Raleigh with a 1-0 victory, but Piedmont's
KARA TAYLOR spoiled those plans with a game-tying solo home run, the first of the season for Piedmont, to lead off the seventh inning for the Lions. Steinmeyer pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to send Piedmont to its second extra-inning game of the day.
In the eighth,
HANNAH CALLAWAY entered the game as a pinch-runner at second base as part of the international tiebreaker rules and was promptly sacrifice bunted to third by
HANNAH MORGAN.
In the next at bat,
LAUREN ENGLISH grounded to short, but Callaway was too quick and beat the throw coming home to give Piedmont a 2-1 lead and score what would be the game-winning run.
Steinmeyer again took to the circle in the bottom half of the eighth as Piedmont conceded a sacrifice bunt to put M'Kenzie Davis at third base with one out. Steinmeyer would get each of the next two Pride hitters to pop out as Piedmont escaped with a dramatic come-back victory to close out the weekend.
Cox was saddled with a tough loss after a stellar showing that included 12 strikeouts in her eight innings pitched. She allowed just one earned run that came on Taylor's game-tying home run.
Steinmeyer was phenomenal in the circle as she allowed just the one earned run in the game, but part of the reason for her success came from her defense. In the second inning, it looked as though Greensboro would have two runners in scoring position with no outs, but Steinmeyer fielded her position by backing up home plate after a double and fired the overthrown ball to
DREW GRAHAM at shortstop.
Graham tagged out Jamie Hammer, who had just hit the double on the play, between second and third, and then made a diving tag on pinch-runner Brittany Apgar as she tried to scramble back to third. That play halted what could have been a huge inning for the Pride, which made all the difference in one of the more well-pitched games Piedmont will play in all season.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-
MEGAN STEINMEYER more than earned her first win as a Lady Lion as she went a complete eight innings while allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out five.
-
KARA TAYLOR's game-tying home run, the first long ball of the season for the Lady Lions, gave Piedmont the opportunity to win the ballgame in extra innings. It was Taylor's third extra-base hit of the day.
UP NEXT:
- With Sunday's games in Raleigh cancelled, Piedmont's next game is scheduled for Friday, March 4, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgo. Piedmont first game of the tournament will be at 3:30 p.m. versus Pomona-Pitzer.
