DEMOREST, Ga. – The 14
th-ranked Piedmont University softball team flipped the script in day two of the Piedmont Softball Classic and earned its first two wins of 2022 thanks to a bounce-back day for the offense.
After totaling just four runs in two games on Saturday, the Lady Lions exploded for 13 runs in the first game, leading to a 13-5 (F/6) win over the George Fox Bruins. Senior righthander
MARTINA MALOCH led the way from the circle in game two as Piedmont outlasted the 17
th-ranked Berry Vikings 4-3 in a back-and-forth contest.
Game 1 – Piedmont 13, George Fox 5 (F/6)
Piedmont didn't have the success at the plate on Saturday that they were hoping for but flipped the script in game one on Sunday as the Lions jumped out to an early lead after hanging six runs on the board in the second inning.
The Lady Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, racking up seven hits, three of which went for extra bases, to show their first signs of offensive life in 2022.
The Bruins wouldn't go quietly and cut the deficit in half in the next half inning with a three-run homer, then scored one in each of their next two frames to bring the margin to just 6-5.
Piedmont responded again with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game almost entirely out of reach.
REBEKAH STEGMAYER highlighted the inning with a two-run single to score
DREW GRAHAM and
KATHLEEN MAIJALA to make it 10-5.
After a clean top of the sixth for Piedmont starter
EMMA MCBRAYER, the Lions hung three more runs on the board in the bottom half to build an eight-run advantage to end the game early. Maijala delivered the walk-off hit, a double off the base of the centerfield wall, to score pinch-runner
HANNAH SMITH from third.
All nine starters for Piedmont had at least one hit in the game, including three for catcher
HANNAH MORGAN. Morgan scored two runs, added an RBI and stole a pair of bases in the game while also throwing out two would-be base stealers in the game.
McBrayer earned the win in her first outing of the year as she allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out six Bruins hitters.
Game 2 – Piedmont 4, Berry 3
Piedmont jumped ahead early in game two as well as
REBEKAH STEGMAYER caused problems again as she reached on an infield single to leadoff the game. The senior went on to steal both second and third before scoring on a groundout from
JASMINE LOWERY to put Piedmont ahead 1-0.
That lead was short-lived for the Lions as the Vikings responded in the top of the second with a run of their own after a pair of singles scored Morgan Frye to tie the game. Piedmont answered right back in the bottom half as
LYNDZI PARTLOW singled home
DREW GRAHAM to make it 2-1 Piedmont after two.
The back-and-forth affair continued deep into the ballgame as the two sides traded blows in the fifth and sixth innings. Berry tied the game in the fifth, just for the Lions to retake the lead in the bottom half when Stegmayer singled home
LYNDZI PARTLOW.
Much the same happened in the 6
th inning when the Vikings plated a run on a two-out double, but the Lions again retook the lead in their half when pinch runner
JENNA BROACH scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Broach took the place of
MADISON HENRY after she led off the inning with a double.
Senior pitcher
MARTINA MALOCH finished off her complete game win in the top of the seventh when an unconventional 4-3 double-play ended the game. Maloch earned her first win of the season after allowing seven hits and just two earned runs.
