Women's Lacrosse Drops Opener at Berry

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Berry 16, Piedmont 6
Records: Berry, 2-0; Piedmont, 0-1

ROME, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team fell 16-6 in its season opener at Berry on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings used a 5-0 scoring run in the first and second quarter to build a lead they never relinquished.

For the Lady Lions, freshmen scored five of the team's six goals as MAGGI SPRATLIN and KAYLEE MORELAND scored two apiece while MERRYN BUMPASS added her first career goal as well.

Berry opened the scoring in the early going as Molley Cross found the back of the net less than 15 seconds into the contest. Piedmont responded as Spratiln scored her first career goal and the first of the season for the Lady Lions not even three minutes into the game.

However, from there, the Vikings were able to wrestle control, holding Piedmont off the scoreboard until 13:10 left in the second quarter, when Spratlin tallied her second to make it a 6-2 Berry lead.

Although the Lady Lions were able to cut their deficit to just three goals late in the first half, the Vikings scored to go back up 8-4 in the final minute before the break.

Moreland found the back of the net to make it an 8-5 contest early in the third quarter, but that was as close as Piedmont came the rest of the way, with the Vikings playing stifling defense to finish the game with an 8-1 run.

Piedmont will have a week break before playing next, a road contest against Birmingham-Southern next Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
