SEASON RECAP: 2022 Cross Country

2022 PIEDMONT CROSS COUNTRY SEASON RECAP

  • The Piedmont University cross country team wrapped up a historic year for the program that ended in a CCS Championship on the Women's side and multiple brilliant individual performances for the team.
  • On the women's side, Senior Jaycie Ponce had a historic season, propelling the team to a CCS title while also earning herself the individual title and qualifying her for the NCAA Championships.
  • Lions men's runner Layton Bradford's performance at the NCAA South Region earned him All-Region honors and helped the team finish 9th in the event.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Jaycie Ponce brought home the individual title with a 22:55 and assisted the team in taking first place overall. The historic time for Ponce moved her to second fastest in program, just 2 second behind former Lady Lion Val Angel.
  • Anna Gibson posted a top 5 finish and a PR with a time of 25:04.5.
  • Turning in a time of 25:10.7, Skyler Seeber finished in the top 5 with a PR of her own.
  • Rounding out the top 10 finishes for the Lady Lions, LeeAnn Lawrence came in 9th place with a PR time of 25:38.8.
CHAMPIONS: Ponce's Individual Title Leads Lady Lions to CCS Women's Cross Country Championship
  • On the heels of a Layton Bradford, the team finished behind Berea College by just 9 points.
  • Bradford turned in a time of 26:50.7, being the one of 10 Lion runners to finish in the top 20.
  • Teammates Darius Smith, Jacob Ballot and Tucker Cox all finished in the top 10.
Men's Cross Country Place Second at CCS Championship
  • Layton Bradford earned all-region honors finishing 32nd overall with a time of 27:13.5.
  • The Lions narrowly missed program history, finishing 12th overall as a team and just a few slots away from a program best.
Men's Cross Country Finishes Season With NCAA South Regional
  • On the heels of Jaycie Ponce's 15th place finish individually, the team posted a new program best finish at the NCAA South Region.
  • An overall finish of 9th place for the Lady Lions is now a program record.
  • Ponce turned in a time of 24:08.0, earning herself all-region honors and a trip to the NCAA Championship
Women's Cross Country Posts Program Best Finish at NCAA South Regionals
  • In the brutal cold of Lansing Michigan, Jaycie Ponce competed at the NCAA Division III Championship.
  • She became just the second runner in school history to compete in the NCAA Championship.
  • Ponce placed 280th out of 292 runners.

JIMISON WINS COACH OF THE YEAR

  • Head coach Jamie Jimison was awarded the CCS 2022 Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year honor. 
  • Jimison, in his fourth year at Piedmont, has set the standard high as he was previously awarded the 2021 USA South Track & Field Coach of the Year.
