DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's basketball team was unable to overcome a third quarter run by Greensboro in an 84-78 loss on Friday night at Cave Arena.
The Lady Lions had two 20+- point scorers as
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON paced the team with a season-best 24 points while
ASHLEY SCOTT poured in four three-pointers and dropped a career-high 20 points in the loss.
The game was back-and-forth early, as neither side was able to gain much separation. However, the Pride used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter to grab a double-digit lead which they never relinquished.
After Greensboro raced out to an early 15-12 lead, the Lady Lions fought back with an 8-0 run over the last 4:06 of the first quarter to take a 20-15 lead going into the second.
Piedmont held the lead by a slim margin throughout most of the second quarter until a quick 4-0 run by Greensboro in the final seconds of the first half gave the Pride its first lead since midway through the first quarter. Greensboro's Karli Mason was on fire from deep in the first half, connecting on five three-pointers to score all 15 of her points in the first 20 minutes.
While the Pride scored on their opening possession of the second half, Scott delivered a personal 7-0 run for Piedmont to jump back in front 45-42. After a
BENTLEY CRONIC free throw knotted the score at 48-all, Greensboro took the lead for good and outscored the Lady Lions 11-3 over the final 3:21 of the period to establish control of the contest.
Greensboro led by as many as 12 points in the final quarter while a late rally for Piedmont was only able to cut its deficit to four in the final seconds after a scoring barrage from Washington. Unfortunately, it was too late, as the Pride were able to run out the clock and seal the win.
Up next, the Lady Lions will host Sewanee on Sunday, Nov. 27 with a 12 p.m. tip.
