Lady Lions Pull Away from Sewanee, Bank First Home Win 75-57

DEMOREST, Ga. - Behind a season-high 28 points from senior NAKIYAH WASHINGTON, the Piedmont women's basketball team pulled away to defeat Sewanee, 75-57, on Sunday afternoon at Cave Arena.

Fresh off reaching the 1,000 career point mark in Friday night's home opener, Washington was even better on Sunday, adding 12 rebounds to go with her team-high 28 points in the win. She was joined in double figures by LAKEN STILES, who poured in 15 points, and LU WOOLFOLK, who tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.



 

After Sewanee took the lead on the opening possession of the game, Piedmont scored the next 10 points and led the rest of the way.

Washington's layup with 1:17 left in the first quarter gave the Lady Lions a 20-11 lead and they took a 20-13 advantage into the second quarter.

The Tigers were able to keep within striking distance in the second quarter, holding Piedmont to just 13 points on 33 percent shooting. However, Sewanee made just four field goals in the period and still trailed by seven at the halftime break. Washington was the lone Lion in double figures, scoring 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.



 

Piedmont was able to keep the Tigers at arm's length through most of the third quarter, but the game remained in the balance headed to the final 10 minutes as Cydney Wright's layup at the buzzer ending the third quarter cut Sewanee's deficit to 52-47 going to the fourth.

Finally, the Lady Lions were able to take control with a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter as Washington scored seven points in the stretch to extend the lead to 64-47. 

From there, Piedmont was able to ice the game at the free throw line, connecting on all 13 of its attempts in the final quarter.

Up next, the Lady Lions will have a week off from competition and host Tufts next Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. It will mark the team's final home contest in the 2022 calendar year.

TURNING POINT:
- After Sewanee battled back at the end of the third quarter to shrink the Piedmont lead to five points, the Lady Lions responded with a 13-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and regain control.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Washington eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark on Friday and added a season-high 28 points to go with 12 rebounds on Sunday.

 

- Stiles recorded 15 points, reaching double figures for the fourth time this season.
- Woolfolk reached double figures in back-to-back games, tallying 11 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont was outstanding from the foul line, making 19-of-22 for the game and 13-of-13 in the final quarter.
