Men's Basketball Escapes at Millsaps with 63-62 Win

JACKSON, Ms. - In a game that came down to the final possession, the Piedmont University men's basketball team survived to earn a 63-62 win at Millsaps. The win moves Piedmont to .500 on the season.

Piedmont was first on the board after nearly two minutes and built a 6-0 lead before Millsaps banked their first basket. The Lions held a 17-12 lead 10 minutes into the contest and built a 12 point lead 30-18 with 5:02 to play before halftime. 

The Majors bounced back to pull within three but the Lions held the lead 36-31 at the break. 

RYAN JOLLY scored a fast break layup to start the second half and converted an and-one opportunity to increase the lead to eight out of the gate. A HUNTER NORMAN jumper with 12:32 to play put Piedmont up 49-42, but the Lions went cold. 

For over three minutes, Piedmont was kept off the board as Millsaps came back to tie the contest at 49. Piedmont jumped back out in front by five, but it was a battle down the stretch. 

Millsaps took a 56-54 lead with 5:59 to play, but the Lions did not concede. Piedmont scored the next nine straight in the game to go up 63-56 with 2:21 to play. 

The Lions did not score in the final 2:21 but were able to hold on. Millsaps took possession after a Piedmont turnover with 1:19 to play and converted a pair of free throws to make it a one point contest.

Piedmont was unable to convert on the ensuing possession but with four seconds remaining, the Majors missed the game-winner on the last possession. 

Up next, the Lions host Methodist on Sunday, November 27 at 2:00 p.m. inside Cave Arena. 

TURNING POINT:
--A turnover by Piedmont with less than 90 seconds on the clock set up the Majors inside the final minute, but Piedmont was able to escape a last-second shot by Millsaps and hold on for the victory.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--RYAN JOLLY led Piedmont with 19 points Saturday shooting 8-of-14 from the floor while adding six rebounds and six assists. 
--Both WILL RICHTER and GARRETT BEAGLE were in double figures as well with Richter adding 11 while Beagle scored 10. 

NEWS AND NOTES:
--Millsaps claimed a late lead with under six to play, but Piedmont was able to close out the contest and secure the win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Jolly led all scorers in the contest with his 19 points as the Majors' Doug Watson scored 13 to lead Millsaps.
