Lions Drop Road Contest to Birmingham-Southern 86-75

NEED TO KNOW:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A late rally by Birmingham-Southern proved to be the difference in an 86-75 loss Sunday for the Piedmont men's basketball team.  

The Panthers led the entirety of the first half including by as many as 13 with under six minutes to go till the break. They used a 12-1 run over a near five minute span as the Lions were held to just a single made free throw during that time. 

BSC led 40-33 at the break as neither team could net a shot in the final 90 seconds of the first half. A 10-0 run for Piedmont in the early-going of the second half gave the Lions their first lead 43-42. 

The Lions extended the lead to seven 63-56 with 9:09 to play, but the Panthers were on the prowl. An 11-0 run put them back on top, but the Lions did not go down without a fight.

The two battled down the stretch with Piedmont claiming the lead after an ORRY CLEMENTS-OWENS conversion on a fast-break to put Piedmont up 71-70. 

A 16-4 run was the difference in the contest as the Panthers closed out the game holding the Lions scoreless from the field in the final 3:30 of the game. 

Up next, Piedmont will open the home schedule taking on Oglethorpe Wednesday at 7 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
--The Panthers were able to hold Piedmont scoreless from the field over the final three minutes of the game to close out the win on a 16-4 run. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--RYAN JOLLY led the team with 12 points, his season-high on the year as he has improved his point total in each of the three countable contests so far this year. 
--GARRETT BEAGLE led the team with eight rebounds as he was just two rebounds shy of a double-double, adding 11 points. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Piedmont had five scorers in double-figures with a true team effort leading the way.
