Earls’ Hat Trick Lifts Men’s Soccer to Win Over Ferrum

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 3, Ferrum 1
Records: Piedmont, 1-1; Ferrum, 0-2

DANVILLE, Va. – Piedmont University's men's soccer team earned its first win of the 2021 fall season on Saturday afternoon thanks to a hat trick from senior forward CAMERON EARLS.

The Lions jumped ahead early and never looked back against the Ferrum Panthers as Earls' three goals, all in the first half, led to a 3-1 Piedmont victory in the neutral site tilt.

Earls, who led Piedmont in goals last season with 11, was scoreless in Piedmont's opening day loss to Berry on Wednesday, but wasted no time getting back to form with his standout performance on Saturday.

Piedmont's first goal came in the sixth minute of the contest after Earls and sophomore MATTHEW LOFTIN hounded a Ferrum defender to prevent a clear. Loftin led Earls to the top of the box to set up a shot that beat Ferrum keeper William Winters to the left post.

Earls got loose again in the 27th minute as sophomore RICARDO RUIZ led him down the middle with a long pass, forcing Winters to come up and attempt to defend Earls at the top of the box. Earls chipped one past and off the right post for his second goal, putting Piedmont up 2-0.

Earls capped off the first half hat trick just two minutes later as sophomore MATTHEW FRANKLIN sent a ball from the left sideline to the front of the goal, which again drew Winters away from the goal line. After a ricochet, Earls was left all alone at point blank range to head the ball in for goal number three.

The Lions were dominant from start to finish versus the Panthers, who are still looking for their first win of the fall. Jeffrey Calix did get Ferrum on the board with a penalty kick goal in the 84th minute, but it wasn't enough against Earls and company as the Lions moved to 1-0 away from the Walker Athletic Complex.

Inside the Box Score:
- Piedmont outshot Ferrum by a convincing 22-12 margin, partly stemming from a 9-3 Piedmont advantage in corner kicks.
- Freshman CJ WYBORN made three saves and allowed just one goal, which came via a penalty, to earn his first career victory as a collegiate keeper.

Up Next:
- Piedmont stays in Danville for another night and will take on the host team, the Averett Cougars, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
