Lady Lions Hang Tough in 1-0 Home Loss to No. 15 Centre

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: No. 15 Centre 1, Piedmont 0
Records: Centre, 8-1-1; Piedmont, 4-2-3

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's soccer team hung close but fell, 1-0, to No. 15 Centre on Sunday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.

The nationally-ranked Colonels controlled possession and the shot count most of the way. However, the Lady Lions remained in striking distance thanks to an outstanding game in goal from freshman goalkeeper HAYLEE DORNAN, who made a season-best nine saves to keep Piedmont in the contest.

Centre struck for the only goal it needed in the 17th minute as Alex Barnhill delivered an on-target cross to the back post that was put away by Mills Mullen.

The Colonels took that one goal lead into halftime and held a 14-1 shot advantage at the break.

Piedmont evened up the shot count slightly in the second, taking four attempts while holding Centre to 11.

After scoring in back-to-back games, KAYLEE KING led the Lady Lions with a pair of shot attempts for the contest.

Mullen and Megan Sidaway paced the Colonels, taking five shots apiece.

Although Piedmont controlled the ball more in the second half, it was unable to find the back of the net in the shutout loss.

Up next, the Lady Lions will step back into conference play, heading to Brevard this coming Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Piedmont defeated the Tornados this past spring, 1-0, in the USA South West Division Tournament First Round.

TURNING POINT:
- The Colonels tallied the only goal of the game as Mills Mullen scored her second of the season off an assist from Alex Barnhill.

 STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Freshman goalkeeper HAYLEE DORNAN made a number of key saves to keep Piedmont close, making a season-high nine in the contest.
