DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a dominant 3-0 sweep of LaGrange to earn a Saturday split after falling to Covenant to start the afternoon.
Inside Cave Arena, the Lady Lions began the day with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Covenant before rebounding with an outstanding performance to down the Panthers 3-0, capped by an impressive 25-13 third-set win.
Match 1: Covenant 3, Piedmont 0
In its opening match of the day, the Lady Lions battled in the first two sets before the Scots took control with a dominating 25-13 win in the third to cap the victory.
The Scots only had five more kills than Piedmont for the match, but the Lady Lions made 24 attack errors compared to just 14 for Covenant.
ALAINA MCDONALD led Piedmont with six kills while both
CIERA PHELPS and
HANNAH KATE CHADWELL tallied five apiece. Sophomore
TAYLOR HERRMANN led the squad with 15 digs and was joined in double digits by freshman
VANESSA MANZO, who tallied 10.
Piedmont led early in the first set. However, Covenant took control and pulled away late to win, 25-18.Â
The Lady Lions put together a .175 hitting percentage and totaled 13 kills to Covenant's 11 in the second. Unfortunately, the Scots used a 6-0 run to build an 18-12 lead midway through the set, which proved too much for Piedmont to overcome.
Riding the momentum of the late run in the second, the Scots led wire-to-wire in the third, winning the final seven points of the match to seal the victory.
JESSICA SCONYERS delivered a team-leading three block assists in the loss.
Match 2: Piedmont 3, LaGrange 0
With LaGrange reeling from dropping the final three sets in its four-set loss to Covenant, the Lady Lions took advantage and eked out a back-and-forth first set, 25-23.
After the Lady Lions went up 6-3 in the early going, neither side was able to lead by more than two until Piedmont won 6-of-7 to build a 23-20 and held on to take the set.
Piedmont only committed three attack errors in the first set and tallied a .194 hitting percentage, compared to .116 for the Panthers.
It was more of the same in the second, as neither side was able to separate until the Lady Lions built a 21-16 lead after a quick 3-0 run. While the Panthers made it interesting, Piedmont held on to take the set, 25-22.
Taking advantage of momentum, the Lady Lions rolled in the third set, jumping out to a gigantic lead and never taking their foot off the pedal to earn the sweep with a 25-13 win in the third. Piedmont was outstanding defensively in the final set, holding the Panthers to a -.044 hitting percentage.
Up next, the Lady Lions will travel to take on Agnes Scott this Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Sophomore
TAYLOR HERRMANN delivered a career-best 22 digs to lead the Lady Lions against LaGrange and totaled 37 for the day after also leading with 15 against Covenant.

JENNIFER HERRERA and
BROOKLYN GUNN tied for the team lead with 14 assists.

BRI KING led the squad with eight kills while freshman
JESSICA SCONYERS tallied six kills with an impressive .545 hitting percentage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
