DANVILLE, Va. - The Piedmont women's soccer team concluded its three-game weekend road trip on Sunday afternoon with a 2-2 draw at Averett.

For the second straight game, sophomore forward GABBIE HAYES put the Lady Lions on the board early, this time with a goal in the 11th minute. However, the Cougars seconds later and took the lead late in the first half before Piedmont roared back to knot the score up at 2-2 in the second half as senior defender KATELYN SMITH converted a penalty kick.

It was all defense in the game's first 10 minutes with neither team recording a shot until Hayes slipped past the Averett back line after receiving a pass from TORI ROPER and converted for the second straight contest. The assist for Roper marked the first for the senior forward's career.

Unfortunately for Piedmont, its lead was extremely short-lived as the Cougars' Celia de Diego struck just over 20 seconds later to even the score at one apiece. The game remained all square until the Cougars jumped out front in the 37th minute as Maiju Hyvarinen found the back of the net off an assist from Asia Williams.

The Cougars held a 7-5 first half edge in total shots but the teams were even at 3-3 in shots on goal.

Making her second career start, freshman goalkeeper LAILA ALLEN surrendered goals on two of her first three shots on goal faced but held Averett off the board for the final 65 minutes.

Trailing by a goal early in the second half, the Lady Lions delivered the equalizer in the 60th minute as Smith converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the fall season.

From there, neither side was able to find the back of the net again as the next 50 minutes were played in scoreless fashion.

The game was evenly played throughout, as each team held a brief lead and the game was tied twice.

Up next, the Lady Lions will return home and face Warren Wilson this Thursday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Trailing by a goal for nearly 30 minutes of game action, KATELYN SMITH's penalty kick strike evened things up which is where the game remained the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
