Lady Lions Rebound, Take Down Marietta 2-0

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 2, Marietta 0
Records: Piedmont, 2-1-1; Marietta, 0-3

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Piedmont women's soccer team bounced back on Saturday, rolling to a 2-0 road win over Marietta College on Saturday afternoon in Ohio.

The Lady Lions struck for a goal in each half as sophomore GABBIE HAYES netted what turned out to be the game winner in the 30th minute off an assist from junior ANYA OLSON.

Playing its second of three games over a four-day span, Piedmont rebounded after falling 4-0 at Mary Baldwin to start the road trip Thursday.

Goalkeeper MADI WILSON made her second start this season and has still not allowed a goal. The sophomore from Loganville, Georgia made five saves Saturday after making six in last Monday's 0-0 draw at Birmingham-Southern.

Piedmont controlled play throughout the first half, holding a 7-4 edge in total shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Lions finally broke the scoreless tie on Hayes' first of the season on the assist from Olson.

Heading into the final 45 minutes with a 1-0 lead, the score remained that way until the Lady Lions put the game away as HAILEY TIGUE found the back of the net off an assist from ABBY RYAN. The goal marked the second of Tigue's career and was the first career assist for Ryan.

Marietta mounted a rally in the second half, with four shots on goal. However, Wilson was there on all four, helping keep the Lady Lions in front until Tigue's late goal.

Up next, Piedmont concludes its weekend road trip, taking on Averett tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Danville, Virginia.

TURNING POINT:
- After finishing second on the team with five goals in the spring, GABBIE HAYES' first of the fall season proved to be all the Lady Lions needed in the 2-0 win.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- MADI WILSON has accrued 11 total saves without allowing a goal through two starts this season.
