LaGRANGE, Ga. - The Piedmont baseball team dropped a pair of contests in USA South Tournament first round action against LaGrange Saturday. The Panthers took game one 23-2 and game two 14-1.
The Panthers offensive was explosive scoring a total of 37 runs over the two contests.
Game 1: LaGrange 23, Piedmont 2
LaGrange continued its offensive onslaught from this past weekend, striking early and often to build a 15-0 lead after three innings.
The Panthers struck first on a two-run homer from EJ Churchich in the bottom of the first before adding two more runs in the second. The third inning broke the game wide open as they plated 11 total runs on 11 base hits.
LaGrange continued the offensive workshop with six total home runs scoring 23 runs on 29 hits. The Lions managed six hits with
KYLE DEJESUS driving in
SCOTT LYON in the sixth and Lyon hitting a solo shot in the eighth inning.
Game 2: LaGrange 14, Piedmont 1
LaGrange was able to strike first once more with two runs in the top of the first. The Lions used a total of eight pitchers in game two surrendering a total of 17 hits.
The Panthers held a 5-1 lead after the first three innings and tacked on another five spot in the sixth inning. Piedmont got on the board in the second inning with a run on two hits and an error.
ZACH NORMAN singled and later scored on an error with two outs as
JAMES WHITMER reached on a single to put two on and both advanced on an error. That was the lone run the Lions would manage in the contest.
The Lions totaled six hits in game two and left 11 runners on base.
This concludes the 2021 campaign which saw the Lions go 21-16 as Head Coach Justin Scali has had 20+ wins in each of his completed seasons (excluding 2020 which was cut short due to COVID-19).
