BREVARD, N.C. - The Piedmont baseball team split a road conference doubleheader at Brevard losing the first 4-2 before a 9-2 win in the second contest. It was a pair of seven inning contests Monday moving the Lions' record to 18-11 and 4-2 in USA South play.
Game one saw the Tornados jump out quickly with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff error in the inning put one runner on, then the next three straight batters recorded hits.
SAM CARPENTER gave up a total of nine hits through his six innings with all but one run earned for the Tornados.
Piedmont managed just one hit in the first game coming in the third inning when the Lions were able to plate a run with the assistance of a pair of errors and a pair of walks.
Game two saw the Lions have a big inning in the third with five runs scoring off six hits and one error.
BRAYDEN BROOKS had a leadoff triple in the inning followed by back-to-back-doubles from
SCOTT LYON and
TYLER SHELEY. Piedmont had six hits in the inning with five extra-base hits as
JACK BARTLEWSKI and
ZACH NORMAN also doubled in the inning.
PEYTON IRVIN earned the win tossing six innings allowing six hits and one earned run. Both of Brevard's runs came in the home half of the third thanks to three hits and an error.
Piedmont scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with nine runs on 12 hits total. Four Lions had multi-hit games and three Lions had two RBI each. Piedmont also drew a total of five walks in the contest.
Up next, Piedmont will head to Covenant to take on the Scots in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
--The Tornados scored three runs on three hits and one error in the first inning of game one to jump out to an early lead and claim the victory.
--Piedmont scored five runs in the third inning of game two after five extra-base hits in the inning.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Piedmont had just one hit in game one off the bat of
TYLER SHELEY.
--
JACK BARTLEWSKI was 2-for-3 in the second game with a pair of RBI.
