SEWANEE, Tenn. – Piedmont College's men's and women's track and field teams each defeated Sewanee and Covenant at yesterday's Mountain Laurel Invitational to earn both programs meet titles.
The Lion women dominated the meet and scored more than double the points than second place Sewanee, while the men manage to edge Covenant by seven team points. In the process, five school records were broken in Saturday's meet, four of which were on the women's side.
Three women's field athletes set new program records, including
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON in the shot put. Washington's throw of 11.45 meters was the best of the four Lions in the event and eclipsed her previous school record mark by 0.22 meters.
Washington had set the school record just last week at the Berry Invitational.
ANN CROMER also outdid her own program record with a 37.59-meter mark in the discus. Cromer had previously set the record at 37.27 meters at the Susan Rouse Invite earlier this season.
The third Lady Lion to set a new record was
CORTNEY BROWN with a 29.89-meter javelin throw. Brown entered the event at second place in the program record book for the javelin after recording a 28.08-meter mark earlier this year at Southern Wesleyan.
VAL ANGEL was the lone Piedmont runner to rewrite the record book on Saturday as she clocked a 11:23.47 in the 3000-meter run to overtake the old mark by precisely two and a half seconds.
On the men's side,
KILLIAN MCCLAIN added on to another of his records as he broke his previous hammer throw record by nearly 0.3 meters with a 45.55-meter toss.
This weekend was the final regular season meet on the schedule for both programs as they now turn their attention to next week's USA South Championship meet. The meet will take place on Wednesday, April 28, and Thursday, April 29, in Berea, Kentucky.
