DEMOREST, Ga. – Junior outfielder
KATELYN PERRY delivered the walk-off single in game two of Piedmont College's softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, giving the Lady Lions a 4-3 win and earning them a split with conference foe Huntingdon.
Piedmont scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit and get a much-needed with in game two after an overall rough day at the plate.
Both pitchers dominated game one as Piedmont's
EMMA MCBRAYER and Huntingdon's Lauren Melton went toe-to-toe in a pitcher's duel. Melton held the Lions to just five hits, two of which coming from
KAITLIN ISLEY, while striking out nine and walking just one.
Each team left the bases loaded in the sixth inning as both pitchers worked around trouble, but the Hawks finally broke the stalemate in the seventh inning with a single run that proved to be enough.
Huntingdon's lone run came after Isley knocked down a hard-hit ball at third base, but her rushed throw just got away from first baseman
KARA TAYLOR, allowing Lydia Lewis to score the game-winning run from second base.
Piedmont managed to move the would-be tying run to third base in the bottom half of the inning, but Melton induced a pair of groundouts to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory for the Hawks.
Game two went scoreless into the third inning as well before the Hawks pushed another single run across thanks to some small ball as Caitlyn Caffee scored on an RBI single after a sac bunt and a throwing error from
HANNAH MORGAN put her into scoring position.
Caffee scored again for the Hawks in the fifth inning after an error from
MACIE ALLEN sparked a chaotic play that allowed her to score from second and put Huntingdon up 2-0.
Piedmont got on the board for the first time in the doubleheader in the bottom half after back-to-back RBIs from Allen and
TK SAULS scored
HANNAH CALLAWAY and
HANNAH SMITH.
Errors again plagued Piedmont in the top of the sixth as a popped-up bunt attempt gave the Lions a big out, but Morgan's throw to third in an attempt to back-pick Emily Nieuwstraten hit her in the helmet and bounded into left field, allowing her to score the go-ahead run.
To that point, not a single run scored in the doubleheader had been earned, and the Lady Lions had racked up six errors in game two.
Despite some misfortune, Piedmont roared back in the seventh inning to earn a dramatic come-from-behind win in game two. After back-to-back hits from Smith and pinch-hitter
MACKENZIE DAVIS,
REBEKAH STEGMAYER delivered an RBI singled on an attempted bunt to load the bases with just one out.
Isley nearly ended the game with her RBI single that scored Smith to tie the game, but Allen, the would-be winning run, was thrown out on a close play at the plate for the second out.
After the potential momentum-shifting play, Perry delivered her single to the right-center gap to plate Stegmayer and give the Lions and important win in game two.
McBrayer was the pitcher of record in both games after she got the final two outs in the top half of the seventh inning for the Lions.
