DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont baseball team used an offensive onslaught to run past Maryville in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon at Loudermillk Field.

The Lions used an 11-run bottom of the fourth inning in game one's 18-1 win by run rule after seven innings before home runs by JACK BARTLEWSKI and CARTER BALLSTADT paced the offense in game two, leading to a 7-1 victory to complete the sweep.

Game 1: Piedmont 18, Maryville 1 (F/7)

The Lions struck early and often, pouncing on the Scots for the most runs scored by the program in a single game since scoring 20 at Berry in 2018. Piedmont scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to break the game open and drew 12 walks, with JAMES WHITMER and TYLER SHELEY earning three apiece.

On the mound, SAM CARPENTER delivered a complete game, going all seven innings and allowing just a single run on five hits to go with no walks and eight strikeouts. The NCAA Division III leader in strikeouts now has 90 on the season, breaking the Piedmont single season record for punchouts in a season.

Every Lion in the starting lineup scored at least one run with Ballstadt leading the team, scoring four. Left fielder ZACH NORMAN was a perfect 5-for-5 at the dish, scoring a pair of runs while driving in one.

The number two through four spots in the batting order delivered a combined nine hits for the game, as KYLE DEJESUS, Ballstadt and Bartlewski tallied three each.

Eight different Lions collected an RBI with Bartlewski pacing the team with three.

Game 2: Piedmont 7, Maryville 1

Making just his second career start for Piedmont, right-hander KYLE YORK earned his first win for the Lions, pitching 5.1 innings and holding Maryville off the scoreboard. That was more than good enough for the Piedmont offense, which scored in five consecutive innings from the third through the seventh.

With the game still scoreless and two outs in the bottom of the third, DeJesus worked a two-out walk and scored as Bartlewski launched his third homer of the season deep to right field to break the scoreless tie.

Then, just a few pitches later, Ballstadt tied Bartlewksi for the the team lead in homers, scorching a line drive to left center that easily cleared the fence and put Piedmont out front 3-0.

From there, the Lions' offense continued to fight, adding single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Norman continued his banner day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored in the winning effort. Batting out ot the nine spot in the lineup, shortstop SCOTT LYON delivered a 3-for-4 evening with a pair of RBI.

Right-handers NATHAN BOYCE and JUSTIN MANUS entered in relief of York and pitched around traffic on the bases, limiting the Scots to just a single run, which they scored in the seventh inning.

The win in game two marks Piedmont's sixth straight in the season series over Maryville. The teams had not met since the 2018 campaign.

Up next, Piedmont will conclude its three-game set with the Scots tomorrow at 3 p.m. Right-hander PEYTON IRVIN is scheduled to take the mound for the Lions.
