DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday, rolling to a 9-0 sweep of Berea in USA South action at the Rome Tennis Center in the morning before battling Emory, but falling 9-0 in Atlanta in the evening.
The Lady Lions' morning win against Berea allowed them to clinch the No. 1 seed in the USA South West Division for the upcoming USA South Championship Tournament.
Match 1: Piedmont 9, Berea 0
Piedmont was in complete control the entire way against the Mountaineers, winning two of three doubles lines 8-0 and only losing one game total in singles on their way to the sweep. The Lady Lions lost just two total games all match ove the course of doubles and singles play.
The No. 1 doubles team of 
RACHEL MARSH and 
MARION SLOYAN got things started with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles before 
DAKOTA HENDRICKSON earned her first career doubles win, partnering with 
MELISSA GISH for an 8-0 sweep at No. 2. Finally, the duo of 
ABBEY GRACE VENHAM and 
KAITLYN HOUSE also delivered an 8-0 sweep to provide the Lady Lions a 3-0 edge heading to singles.
Singles play was more of the same as the Lady Lions continued to dominate. Gish won 6-0, 6-0, picking up her first win at No. 1 singles in her career. Fellow freshman 
ALLISON DEMPSEY also won 6-0, 6-0 and provided the clincher at No. 2 with her first career singles win at Piedmont. 
Freshmen 
DANNIE EVANS (No. 4) and 
RAILEY RICHARDSON (No. 6) also joined the fun, picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins for their first singles victories at Piedmont.
Rounding things out, sophomore 
TYLER PERRY (6-0, 6-0) and freshman 
BROOK PATTON (6-1, 6-0) each delivered dominant performances to complete the sweep.
Match 2: Emory 9, Piedmont 0
Playing in their second match of the day, the Lady Lions were unable to overcome the Eagles, falling by a 9-0 margin.
After dropping each of the first two doubles lines by an 8-0 margin, the No. 3 doubles team of 
IMANI VINCENT and 
MELISSA GISH battled, but fell 8-5 to allow Emory to take a 3-0 lead to singles.
In singles action, the Lady Lions were unable to take any of the six lines, as the Eagles won each in straight sets.
Up next, the Lady Lions are scheduled to host Covenant in nonconference action this Wednesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont's win streak reached 10 matches before it was snapped Saturday evening by the Eagles.
- Over the course of the USA South season, 16 different Lady Lions have won a conference match in 2021.
