DEMOREST, Ga. – Piedmont College's softball team finally started USA South conference play on Thursday with a noon doubleheader, and the Lady Lions arrived in emphatic fashion with a pair of lopsided wins over Brevard College.
The Lady Lions took game one 13-0 in five innings before taking game two 9-1 in six innings as pinch-hitter
JENNA BROACH put Piedmont up by eight with a fielder's choice RBI to complete the sweep with a walk-off win.
In game one, Piedmont scored an early run to lead 1-0 after an RBI single from
KATELYN PERRY, then blew the game open with a four-run third inning that was highlighted by a
KAITLIN ISLEY two-run triple.
Isley stole home later in the inning on a delayed first-and-third double steal with Perry swiping second base.
Piedmont was in the driver's seat with a five-run lead, but expanded the lead even further with a huge fourth inning that saw the Lady Lions tally eight runs on five hits.
REBEKAH STEGMAYER and Broach each had two-RBI hits in the big inning to extend the Piedmont lead to 13-0.
Freshman pitcher
EMMA MCBRAYER did not allow a hit in her three innings of work, as freshman
SHAYLEN SUTTON came on in the fourth to complete the game one win for Piedmont.
In game two, the Tornados tallied three hits in the first inning against Piedmont starter
MARTINA MALOCH, but the junior and her defense kept the Tornados off the scoreboard despite a statement first inning.
Piedmont took advantage of a pair of Brevard errors to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first before the Tornados pushed their first run of the series across in the top of the second on an RBI groundout from Jocelyn Folkers.
After a pair of clean innings from Maloch and Brevard starter Ali Grace Hartman, Perry tripled to start Piedmont's half of the fourth inning before scoring on
KAYLEE WHITE sac fly to put Piedmont back ahead 2-1.
That run sparked another big inning for the Lady Lions in the bottom of the fifth as they plated six runs on four hits. Back-to-back two-RBI hits from Isley and Perry highlighted the big inning that was almost enough to end the game via mercy rule.
Piedmont finished the job in the next inning with Broach's RBI groundout as Piedmont outscored the Tornaods 22-1 across the two games that totaled just 10.5 innings.
