LaGRANGE, Ga. - The Piedmont baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader against the LaGrange Panthers in thrilling fashion. Piedmont came from behind in game one after trailing 10-0 to win 14-10 and claimed the second game 6-4.
It looked to be all LaGrange in game one as they took a 10-0 lead with 10 runs in the second inning. The Panthers scored 10 runs on seven hits and three errors in the frame to take command of the game.
The Lions were not intimidated as they chipped away at the lead with three runs in the third and another three in the fourth to make it 10-6. The Lions scored again in the fifth inning as the Panthers committed two errors in the frame.
It was in the eighth inning that the Lions would claim the lead as
JAMES WHITMER singled to drive in
JACK BARTLEWSKI to tie and
CARTER BALLSTADT to claim the lead. Piedmont added another three runs on two hits in the ninth for good measure.
NATHAN BOYCE entered in relief and earned the win after pitching a stellar outing going 5.2 innings allowing one unearned run on five hits and one walk.
CARTER BALLSTADT entered and earned a save, his fifth of the season, pitching two innings and giving up just one hit.
Game two was quiet until the fifth inning when LaGrange took a 1-0 lead, but it was short-lived as the Lions answered back in the seventh with a four-spot to take a 4-1 lead.
ZACH NORMAN doubled to begin the inning and three additional singles combined with two walks drove in the four runs.
The Lions chased reliever Brett Caneega in the eighth, and Cal Fuller faced just two batters before another call to the bullpen. Fuller walked two including
SCOTT LYON with the bases loaded. A passed ball would send in the other run of the inning for Piedmont making it 6-2.
The Panthers attempted a ninth inning rally after starter
PEYTON IRVIN left and managed two runs off
JUSTIN MANUS before Ballstadt was called back in to the mound. Ballstadt earned his second save of the day and sixth of the season pitching the final two outs of the inning, facing three batters.
Irvin earned the win going eight innings allowing two runs on six hits and one walk. Irvin struck out seven and moved his record to 5-1 this season.
