Men’s Soccer Wins 1-0 in Double OT Thriller at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A header from senior forward CAMERON EARLS lifted the Piedmont College men's soccer team to a stunning and dramatic 1-0, double overtime victory on Saturday afternoon on the road at Huntingdon College.

Earls' team-leading sixth goal of the season was headed past Huntingdon goalkeeper Joshua Burton on a bounce with just around three minutes to play in the contest. The ball was played in off the corner kick perfectly by freshman EVAN SAYLOR, as that assist gave him six on the season to add to his team lead.

Before the corner, sophomore MALA JALLOW nearly connected on a one-timer from just inside the top left of the box, but a diving save from Burton sent the ball out of bounds to set up the corner kick.

The win lifts Piedmont to 3-1 in USA South conference play, which puts the Lions in the top group of three in the west division standings.

The Lions have now won 13 straight on the road at Huntingdon, dating back to the 2003 season.

Saturday's matchup was as even as could be from start to finish as each team had its moments of momentum. Piedmont outshot the Hawks 7-3 in the first half, but the Hawks countered with an 11-5 advantage in that category in the second half.

Each team shot once in the first overtime period, but the Lions got three scoring chances to Huntingdon's one in the final overtime period, the last of which resulted in the game-winner. The total shot counter landed at a 16-16 deadlock, but Piedmont led 10-6 in shots on goal.

The goalkeepers came ready to play Saturday as Burton and Piedmont's CAMERON VERONA combined for 15 saves on 16 total shots on goal. Burton ended the game with 28 saves for the season in conference play while Verona finished fifth in that category with 17.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The game was as well-contested and as clean as any in the USA South this season as no cards, yellow or red, were handed out to either team. In total, there were 21 fouls, 14 of which went against Huntingdon, and eight of those came in the first 45 minutes.
