Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 in 2OT at Berry

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Berry 2, Piedmont 1 (2OT)
Records: Berry, 2-1; Piedmont 4-4

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Piedmont College's men's soccer team battled into double overtime on Monday night but was outdone on the road by the Berry College Vikings in a close 2-1 contest.

The Lions were outshot in the game but hung around until the 100th minute, when Berry's Gerard Cabrera netted the game-winning goal just 39 seconds into the second and final overtime period.

Cabrera's game-winner came on an acrobatic, half-bicycle attempt after a shot was deflected and bounced out too him near the top of the box. His kick beat Piedmont keeper CAMERON VERONA to the left post to put the finishing touches on Berry's second win of the season.

Berry's overtime goal wasn't the first time in the game that it started a period with an early goal. Both teams were scoreless in the first half, but the Vikings struck just 30 seconds into the second half as JP Phillips settled a pass and fired a past Verona to put Berry up 1-0.

Piedmont didn't stay down for long as senior defender IAN ADDISON evened things up with a header in the 55th minute thanks to a perfect pass from freshman RICARDO RUIZ.

Ruiz got free on a run to the short corner and was taken down just outside of the box, which set up essentially a short-distance corner kick for the Lions. His chip to the back post gave Addison the perfect opportunity for his third goal of the season, all of which have been on header attempts.

Both teams remained scoreless until Cabrera's game-winner in double overtime.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lions kept it close with solid defense despite being outshot 19-9 on the game and recording zero shot attempts in the two overtime periods. Piedmont also had just four corner kick attempts to Berry's 13.
- Verona recorded nine saves on 11 shots on goal, his most in a game this season.

UP NEXT:
- Piedmont (4-4 overall) is back in action tomorrow as the Lions take the field in a designated reserve game at Division II Young Harris College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
