ROME, Ga. – The Piedmont women's tennis team was nearly able to pull off a thrilling road win at Shorter on Friday but fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker.
 
Playing under Division II rules, the Hawks used that to their advantage by taking the doubles point and then splitting the six singles lines to eke out the win.
 
The morning started on the right note for the Lady Lions as IMANI VINCENT and MELISSA GISH did not drop a single game on their way to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
 
However, Shorter was able to rally back and take the doubles point thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
 
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, the Lady Lions responded as MAGGIE MOODY delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to even the score.
 
After the Hawks were able to pull ahead 2-1 with a win at No. 1, freshman ABBEY GRACE VENHAM, bumped up to No. 5 in the singles lineup, continued her impressive run with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 to even the tally once again.
 
The back-and-forth continued in a pair of closely contested matches at No. 2 and No. 4.
 
Piedmont's MEGAN WALDHEIM fell in a grueling three-setter at No. 2 but KARA LANDSIEDEL fought back after losing the first set, 6-4, and then being down, 4-1, in the third set to pull the match even at 3-all.
 
Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to prevail by winning a three-setter at No. 6 for the 4-3 final.
 
Up next, the Lady Lions will be in action for the third consecutive day as they will play at Brenau tomorrow at 3 p.m.
 
TURNING POINT:
- After losing the first doubles match at No. 2, Shorter was able to take the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the doubles point, which turned out to be the difference.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Freshman ABBEY GRACE VENHAM improved to 3-0 in her Piedmont in singles, rolling to a two-set win at No. 5.
