Lady Lions Host No. 10 Berry in Home Opener

NEED TO KNOW:
Game 1: Piedmont 3, #10 Berry 4
Game 2: Piedmont 2, #10 Berry 4 F/8
Record: Piedmont 3-5, #10 Berry 6-1

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College softball team hosted #10 Berry Thursday in its home opener dropping a pair of close contests to the Vikings 4-3 in game one and 4-2 in eight innings in game two.

Game 1: Piedmont 3, #10 Berry 4

Game one saw the Vikings claim an early lead with runs in the first and third to lead 2-0. Heading into the fourth inning, Berry's Madison Holland had a perfect game going but a KARA TAYLOR double to right center broke up the perfect game.

Taylor scored on the next play as EMMA MCBRAYER drove her in on a single to shortstop. Piedmont trailed 2-1 at that point, but once again, the Vikings were able to muster runs in the fifth and sixth inning to lead 4-1.

Berry scored four runs on just six hits and three walks making the most of their opportunities. Piedmont was able to capitalize in the seventh with two runs on an error by the third baseman, but it was not enough as the Lady Lions lost by one run.

Piedmont had five hits with no one accounting for more than one and just a single RBI in the game that was off the bat of McBrayer.

Game 2: Piedmont 2, #10 Berry 4 F/8

The Lady Lions took control early in game two with a run in the bottom of the first as EMMA MCBRAYER singled up the middle to drive in MACKENZIE DAVIS. McBrayer added an RBI to her total from game one as she had both of Piedmont's RBI to that point.

It was quiet for a time as the pitcher's dueled but the Vikings were able to tie the game in the fourth inning after a lead-off single, stolen base and an RBI double by Meghan Hunt. Hunt had a pair of extra base hits in the game and both times they were RBI doubles to tie the contest.

Piedmont answered to claim the lead 2-1 in the fifth inning as TK SAULS scored on a HANNAH SMITH single, but Hunt had her second RBI double in the sixth inning to negate the lead.

It took extras to decide but the Vikings made the most of their opportunity scoring two on a fielder's choice with a run down scenario occurring. ABBEY ARRINGTON had entered for Piedmont in extras and took the loss marking her first appearance of the season.

TURNING POINT:
--Game one saw the Lady Lions threaten in the seventh with a pair of runs on an error, but the Vikings held on for the win.
--The Vikings were able to capitalize in extra innings with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the victory.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--EMMA MCBRAYER again had an outstanding day as she pitched a complete game in game one allowing six hits and three earned runs while also creating offense with two of Piedmont's three RBI on the day.
--MARTINA MALOCH earned no decision in game two but pitched a gem against top ten competition going 7.0 innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
