BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior
MEGAN WALDHEIM etched her name in the Piedmont women's tennis record books and delivered the clinching win as the Lady Lions took down Birmingham-Southern, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon in Alabama.
Waldheim began her day by teaming with
MAGGIE MOODY and taking a grueling 8-6 doubles victory at No. 1 to give PC a 2-1 lead going into singles.
Then, with the Lady Lions leading 4-2, she delivered again, prevailing, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles. Her singles win gives her 42 in her career, passing her former teammate
MORGAN BUCHHOLZ for the most in program history. The win also placed her atop the program list for combined victories with 79.
Unlike yesterday when PC was able to sweep all three doubles lines, the Panthers were able to deliver an 8-2 win at No. 3 to answer Piedmont's 8-2 win at No. 2 from
IMANI VINCENT and
MELISSA GISH. After the Lady Lions were able to come through with Waldheim and Moody's big 8-6 win to close out doubles, PC quickly put itself within a point of winning the match after easy wins from Vincent at No. 1 and freshman
ABBEY GRACE VENHAM at No. 6.
However, BSC quickly answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win from Sarah Rushing at No. 5 before Waldheim slammed the door shut, holding off BSC's Emily Enoch to win the second set, 7-5, and give the Lady Lions their second consecutive win.
With the match already decided in Piedmont's favor, BSC was able to prevail in a pair of three-setters at No. 3 and No. 4 to bring the final margin to 5-4.
Up next, the Lady Lions will look to make it four in a row against the SAA as they travel to take on Berry this Thursday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m.
