DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont men's basketball team claimed its fifth straight win earning a sweep of Berea with an 81-66 win Saturday. The Lions closed out the home schedule and regular season schedule and will await conference tournament seeding following the rest of the league's remaining contests.
The contest was remniscent of Friday's with the two teams battling early before Piedmont pulled away late in the first half. The Mountaineers hung around despite Piedmont maintaining the lead through most of the first half, but claimed a brief 25-24 advantage with 5:45 till the break. From that point, Piedmont outscored Berea 18-3 to head into the break with a 42-28 lead.
Three-pointers were what kept the Mountaineers in it in the second half as they connected on seven 3-pointers in the final 20:00 to Piedmont's one. The Lions still managed to outscore Berea in the second half 39-38 to hold on to the double-digit victory.
The Lions' lead jumped to as many as 18 in the second half, but Berea continued to challenge. The Mountaineers used an 11-3 run in the second half to make it a single digit lead for Piedmont 61-53 with just over 10:00 to go inside Cave Arena.
Piedmont found its stride once again in the final 7:00 of play with a 14-1 run before Berea added on five late points in the final 0:15 of play. The defense had held the Mountaineers scoreless from the field for nearly eight minutes prior to the five points in the final 0:15.
The Mountaineers were led by Trey Minter with 22 points and Terique Miller who added 20. The two combined for eight 3-pointers and well over half the Mountaineers points.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont built a late lead in the first half leading 42-28 at the break and did not allow the Mountaineers to come closer than seven points through the duration of the game.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Three Lions scored 15 points in the game as
ANDREW STIMPSON,
RYAN JOLLY and
JORDAN FOOTE led the way.
--Stimpson got it done all around with 15 points, six rebounds and went 6-of-7 from the floor.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Piedmont scored 24 points off the bench with
DALTON MEELER leading bench scorers with nine points.
UP NEXT:
--The Lions closed out the regular season portion of the conference schedule Saturday and will await conference tournament seeding.
