BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Piedmont men's soccer team saw its late rally fall short in a 2-1 loss at Birmingham-Southern on a chilly Wednesday night.

The Panthers (1-1) struck for two goals in the first half and held on late as Piedmont (1-2) cut its deficit to one in the second half but was unable to net the equalizer.

It did not take BSC long to crack the scoreboard, as Coleman Jennings tallied the first of his two first half goals on a 10th minute header after a cross into the box.

Then, late in the first half, Jennings found the back of the net again to give the Panthers a 2-0 cushion going into halftime despite the shot count being even at 5-5.

The Lions threatened in the second half, holding a 10-5 shot advantage and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Piedmont was finally able to strike in the 77th minute on freshman MIHAI STATE's first career goal.

Unfortunately, that was all the Lions were able to find, as the Panthers held onto their slim lead to take the victory.

Up next, the Lions will open their home slate for the spring 2021 season, hosting conference foe Berea this Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- The second of BSC's two goals in the first half proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Freshman MIHAI STATE found the back of the net for Piedmont's first goal of the 2021 spring season.
