DEMOREST, Ga. – In the second meeting between these two this season, Piedmont once again toppled the Stormy Petrels winning 3-2 over Oglethorpe Wednesday at Loudermilk Field.
CARTER BALLSTADT was impressive all around getting it done on offense, defense and on the mound.
The Lions were quick on the draw taking no time to get on the board with a run in the first.
TYLER SHELEY walked and advanced to third on a
KYLE DEJESUS single to put runners on the corners.
JACK BARTLEWSKI lined out to centerfield but on the sacrifice-fly, Piedmont took the lead as Sheley crossed home.
It was pitching by committee Wednesday as the Lions used five arms on the mound with
JAMES REECE earning his first start as a Lion. Reece pitched three innings facing 13 batters giving up three hits, three walks and struck out two.
Reece was followed by
AIDAN COONEY who lasted 1.2 innings giving up a pair of runs on two hits and two walks. Cooney allowed the Stormy Petrels to score two in the fifth inning after a lead-off walk, coupled with a single and sacrifice ground-out to advance two in scoring position. A single by Chris Keane drove both in to claim the lead.
Piedmont was able to answer back in the sixth inning with two runs on three hits as it was the top of the order to lead off again. DeJesus reached after being hit and Bartlewski singled to start a small ball onslaught.
Bartlewski was the first of three-straight Lions' batters to single with
JAMES WHITMER and Ballstadt following suit with RBI singles to give the Lions the lead. Whitmer tied the contest and Ballstadt legged out an infield single to reclaim the lead.
Ballstadt did it all in Wednesday's game coming in from center field to pitch in the eighth inning and struck out the final batter of the inning stranding the tying run at third. He then struck out the side in the ninth inning to close out the game and earn the save.
NATHAN BOYCE earned the win pitching two innings without allowing a hit and struck out four. Combined, the Piedmont pitching staff had 11 strikeouts in the game.
