Men’s Soccer Season Ends With 4-1 Loss at Covenant

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Covenant 4, Piedmont 1
Records: Covenant, 9-3-3 (4-0-2 USAS); Piedmont, 6-10 (2-4 USAS)

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – It wasn't meant to be for Piedmont University's men's soccer team on Monday night, as a 4-1 loss at Covenant eliminated the Lions from USA South tournament contention.

Monday's contest was rescheduled from Saturday after traveling issues prevented Piedmont from making the trip.

Piedmont ends the season at 2-4 in conference play and finishes sixth in the west division regular season standings. The Lions were projected to place third in the division in the preseason coaches poll.

Covenant, who will be the west division's No. 2 seed in the tournament, scored first in the 13th minute as technical passing led to a goal for Austin Berry. Mercer Stout and Parker Owen earned assists on the play that put the Scots ahead 1-0.

The Scots forced the issue on multiple occasions in the first half, leading to 10 shots. Piedmont keeper CJ WYBORN made a couple of stellar saves in the half, including one on a header attempt in the 32nd minute.

On the play, a good pass set up Stout with a header attempt in front of the net, but Wyborn couldn't corral his initial save, allowing Kade Theunissen to finish the job from point-blank range and give Covenant a two-goal advantage.

The Scots added another insurance goal in the 61st minute as Stout again made something happen with a run out down the left side. After breaking past the Piedmont front, he dumped a pass to the opposite post for a charging Jake Major, who put it away for the third goal of the contest.

Piedmont kept up the fight and broke through in the 66th minute as a run down the right side for sophomore OWEN GATES gave the Lions options.

Gates kept his pass on the ground across the middle as senior CAMERON EARLS attracted the attention of the Covenant defense. Earls let the pass go through for senior LULE TEKILEMARIAM, who settled and went around Scots keeper Henry Hooks for a dribble-in goal.

The momentum was short lived as Stout, with three assists already in hand, added a goal of his own after Covenant moved quick after a set of substitutions. The 70th-minute goal put the game away as Covenant improved to 9-3-3 while the Lions were sent to a 6-10 finish.

Inside the Box Score:
- Covenant controlled the time of possession and fired off 24 shots, the second-most the Lions allowed this season.
- CJ WYBORN totaled 10 saves in 69 minutes. It's the second time Wyborn has totaled double-digit saves in a game, with both feats coming in games in which he played less than the full 90 minutes.
- Piedmont finished the season 0-8 in games in which CAMERON EARLS did not score. Earls led the USA South with 18 goals, six more than the next-highest goal scorer.
