DECATUR, Ga. - The Piedmont women's soccer team continued its winning ways, delivering a 4-0 road shutout at Agnes Scott Saturday to conclude its USA South regular season.
The Lady Lions scored twice in each half with all four goals coming from different players.
GABBIE HAYES' penalty kick goal opened the scoring late in the first half before
VICTORIA SIERRA added her third of the season just before halftime. In the second half, junior
ABBY RYAN found the back of the net for the first time in a Piedmont uniform while
MANDY WEINHART scored in the final minute off an assist from
KAYLEE KING to conclude the scoring onslaught.
With the win, Piedmont clinched the USA South West Divsion Regular Season Championship, the first time the program has accomplished the feat.
The win for the Lady Lions marks their seventh in a row after the team fell in its second conference game, a 1-0 loss at Brevard on Sept. 29.
Five of those seven wins have been shutouts while three have come in overtime.
With Saturday's victory, Piedmont will be the No. 1 seed out of the West Division for the upcoming USA South tournament. The Lady Lions will earn a first round bye and will host either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed out of the East Division next Saturday, Oct. 30.
Up next, the Lady Lions will be right back in action tomorrow, as they step out of conference to take on No. 4 Christopher Newport in Greensboro at 3 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- With the game scoreless late into the first half, it was Hayes who delivered the only goal Piedmont needed, converting a penalty kick for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont's win clinches its first ever USA South West Division Regular Season Title.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Weinhart capped the scoring with her third goal of the season. It was assisted by King, who now leads the squad with five assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont controlled possession and dominated the shot count, holding a 29-9 shot advantage for the contest.
- The Lady Lions earned 14 corner kicks while the Scotties were held without one all day.
