GREENSBORO, N.C. - One day after clinching the USA South West Division Regular Season Championship, the Piedmont's women's soccer team saw its seven-game win streak snapped in a 4-0 loss to Christopher Newport in Greensboro.
The fourth-ranked Captains scored three times in the first half and tacked on one more early in the second half to continue their undefeated season.
The Lady Lions were held to just two total shots for the game while Christopher Newport fired 32.
Piedmont freshman goalkeepers
HAYLEE DORNAN and
LAILA ALLEN each played 45 minutes and both had three saves with Dornan allowing just one goal in the second half.
The game was not scoreless for long as Sarah Smith found the back of the net in the game's fifth minute. The game remained at 1-0 for much of the first half before the Captains' Riley Cook added her 13th goal of the season in the 33rd minute.
Then, less than a minute later, Emma Ricci delivered her second assist of the contest, finding Maddie Blake for her first goal of the season to make it a 3-0 contest, which is where things stood going to halftime.
After the Lady Lions surrendered one more early in the second half, the game remained at 4-0 the rest of the way.
Up next,
Piedmont will await its opponent in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament. The Lady Lions will take on either No. 4 seed Mary Baldwin or No. 5 seed Greensboro out of the East Division.
