DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's soccer team prevailed in the second overtime period for the second straight game as
ABBY JUDGE's 105th minute top corner strike lifted the Lady Lions past Covenant on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.
The game was a defensive battle all the way up until the 105th minute, when Judge got her foot to one from about 30 yards away and placed perfectly over the Covenant goalkeeper's outstretched arms.
This marks Piedmont's second straight thrilling home win after Friday night's 2-1 victory over Maryville.
In the early going, the defenses set the tone for the contest as both sides were able to produce just two shot attempts over the first 25 minutes. However, Covenant's best scoring chance of the day came in those 25 minutes as Aiden Strawbridge's free kick rattled the cross bar before the Lady Lions were able to clear it away.
Going into the break, the Lady Lions held a 5-4 shot advantage. However, the second half belonged more to the Scots as they outshot Piedmont, 9-3, over the final 45 minutes of regulation.
For the second straight night, Piedmont freshman goalkeeper
LAILA ALLEN stepped up, making four saves to keep Covenant off the scoreboard.
After both sides were held scoreless for the first overtime period, that set the stage for Judge's late heroics as the junior from Bellbrook, Ohio notched her first career game winner and first goal of the season.
Overall, Piedmont totaled just 12 shots compared to Covenant's 16. However, they held a 1-0 lead in the only column that mattered.
Up next, the Lady Lions will travel to take on Huntingdon in another pivotal USA South showdown. The game is scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m.
