DEMOREST, Ga. – Thanks to
JAMES WHITMER's timely hitting, the Piedmont College baseball team won 2-1 in walk-off fashion over Pfeiffer University Friday evening. The Lions were led on the mound by
SAM CARPENTER who pitched 8.0 innings while
CARTER BALLSTADT earned the win as the pitcher of record in the ninth inning.
Piedmont was first on the board in the second inning after
JAMES WHITMER was walked followed by
EVAN MEADE singling.
CAMERON JACKSON reached on an error to load the bases and
WES SNYDER hit an RBI single to drive in Whitmer for the first run of the game.
Thanks to the error the run was unearned and both runs heading into the ninth inning were unearned. The Falcons added their run in the fifth after a leadoff error and eventually a wild pitch drove across the run.
SAM CARPENTER tossed eight innings and after giving up two hits in the first inning, did not allow but one hit through the next seven innings. Carpenter worked three 3-up, 3-down innings.
In the ninth,
CARTER BALLSTADT entered to pitch and walked the first batter before settling in to get out the next three batters. In the home half, Ballstadt was hit by a pitch to leadoff then advanced to second on a
HARRISON TRAWICK sac bunt.
TYLER SHELEY was intentionally walked then a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. With two outs,
JAMES WHITMER stepped up to the plate and made the magic happen with an RBI single to the outfield to score Ballstadt and send the Lions cascading on the field for the postgame celebration.
