Baseball Extends Win Streak to Three with 4-1 Win Over Oglethorpe

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 4, Oglethorpe 1
Records: Piedmont 3-3; Oglethorpe 1-5

DEMOREST, Ga. – Freshman MATT ALTER earned his first collegiate victory Wednesday night tossing 4.1 innings in relief allowing just a single hit in a 4-1 win over Oglethorpe.

It was pitching by committee for the Lions on Wednesday with RYAN COX earning the start. Cox managed three strikeouts against nine batters in 1.2 innings pitched. MATT ALTER entered to end the second with a groundout to end the 2-out, 2-on threat.

The Lions were on the board first after WES SNYDER doubled to open the bottom of the first and later scored on a TYLER SHELEY RBI groundout. The Stormy Petrels tacked on the tying run in the top of the second on Cox after a pair of singles and a wild pitch.

Piedmont again was quick to claim the lead in the bottom of the frame as JAMES WHITMER hit his team-leading fourth double of the season and was later driven in by DUKE WODETZKI. Alter pitched a clean third inning allowing one hit while striking out one.

The Lions added another run in the bottom of the third after Oglethorpe's starter Davenport struggled with multiple wild pitches and an E2 coupled with a wild pitch brought around HARRISON TRAWICK making it 3-1.

The fourth inning was quiet as both teams went in order, ending Piedmont's scoring streak with one run in each of the first three innings. Neither team would add a run in the fifth or sixth innings though Piedmont had opportunities with a play at the plate in each inning.

KELTON KIESCHNICK entered to start the seventh inning ending Alter's day at 4.1 innings pitched allowing one hit and two strikeouts. Kieschnick pitched the seventh and gave way to WILL JANOFSKY in the eighth inning. Janofsky pitched out of a jam in the eighth, then CARTER BALLSTADT added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.

Following that insurance run to make it 4-1, Ballstadt moved on to the mound to close out the contest and earn his second save of the season.

Up next, the Lions hit the road for a weekend series at Brevard beginning Friday at 2 p.m.
