CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a Division I non-counting exhibition, the Piedmont College men's basketball team gave The Citadel a scare in an 89-64 loss. The Lions trailed by just two points with 9:42 remaining in the contest, but The Citadel used a late run to seal the win.
The Citadel jumped out to an early lead 11-0 and kept Piedmont off the board for the first five minutes of the contest. Three pointers were aplenty in the contest with The Citadel banking seven in the first half with Kaiden Rice accounting for six.
Piedmont trailed 29-14 with 7:26 remaining before the break but slowly began to cut into the lead. The Lions closed out the half on a 10-2 run including a
JAKE SMITH 3-pointer to cap the half with the Lions trailing 39-31 at the break.
The Lions scored the first three points out of the locker room, all from the charity stripe making it just a five point deficit. Piedmont held The Citadel scoreless over a four minute period early in the second half.
An
ORRY CLEMENTS-OWENS jumper made it a three point game at 51-48, but The Citadel would once again extend their lead keeping Piedmont at a distance.
JAKE SMITH banked a 3-pointer with 9:42 remaining to make it 58-56, but that was as close as Piedmont would come in the contest.
The Citadel used a 26-2 run to seal the victory and keep the Lions at bay for a final score of 89-64.
TURNING POINT:
--The Citadel outscored Piedmont 26-2 over a seven minute stretch late, but the Lions' determination kept the contest close to that point.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

RYAN JOLLY followed up his career-high 30-point performance at Bob Jones with 14 points against The Citadel.

JAKE SMITH also scored 14 points going 5-of-7 from the field with four 3-pointers.
--Kaiden Rice was electric from 3-point range scoring 27 points for The Citadel going 9-of-18 from deep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--The Citadel scored 54 of their 89 points from beyond the arc going 18-of-39 from 3-point range.

--The Lions will return to action on November 30 in another exhibition at Western Carolina.
