DEMOREST, Ga. – JORDAN FOOTE scored 27 points and added 14 rebounds as the Piedmont men's basketball team overtook LaGrange, 84-77, on Wednesday night at Cave Arena.
Two days after being named USA South Player of the Week, Foote recorded his third consecutive double-double, knocking down 8-of-14 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free throw line.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw both teams lead by as many as eight points, the Lions (10-9, 5-7 USA South) outscored the Panthers (4-14, 3-8 USA South) 22-12 over the first 10 minutes of the second half and held on to seal their third consecutive win.
Foote was joined in double figures by
MILES RILEY who poured in 12 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.
The beginning of the first half was all Piedmont, with
DALTON MEELER's first three-pointer of the season putting the team up 23-15 with 11:53 left in the half. However, LaGrange immediately answered with a 10-0 run in less than two minutes to take hold of the lead.
Although the Panthers held the lead for the rest of the half, PC finished out the period on a 6-2 run to cut its deficit to 47-44.
The Lions roared out of the locker room and tied the score at 51-all on
EVAN EASTON's three-pointer before retaking the lead at 55-53 on Riley's driving layup with 14:30 left.
From there, Piedmont allowed LaGrange to tie the score on three occasions in the second half, but never took the lead, as Foote knocked down his final four three throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Up next, the Lions will have a week off before returning to action next Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Brevard. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Cave Arena.
TURNING POINT:
- Leading 79-77 with 1:31 remaining, the Lions earned a key defensive stop and made five of their final six free throws to ice the game.
