LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team survived a road test to defeat Covenant, 75-63, on Saturday afternoon in Lookout Mountain.
The Lady Lions (12-8, 8-3 USA South) trailed only briefly in the second half, and pulled away from the Scots (6-12, 3-6 USA South) late in the fourth quarter to claim their fourth consecutive victory.
AMARI PRICE led the way for Piedmont, scoring 19 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. She was joined in double figures by freshman
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON, who poured in 17 points. Fellow freshman
EMILY WILEY converted 8-of-13 free throw attempts to score 15 points.
Neither team was able to separate in the opening quarter, trading baskets as Piedmont took a 13-12 lead late in the period on a pair of
KYLA MICHIENZI free throws.
In the second quarter, the Lady Lions led by as many as eight points on two occasions midway through the second quarter. However, the Scots closed the half on a 6-0 run and only trailed by two going into the locker room.
The Lady Lions surrendered the lead to Covenant briefly on Michaela Price's three-pointer with 5:54 left in the period. PC answered on a Price layup the next possession and led the rest of the period, eventually pulling the lead out to six points going into the final 10 minutes.
The Scots never got closer than four points throughout the fourth quarter, with Piedmont keeping them at arm's length and icing the game from the free throw line.
PC outscored Covenant, 17-12, over the final 4:24 to secure its fourth win in a row, its longest winning streak of the season.
Up next, the Lady Lions return home to host Brevard on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
