LaGRANGE, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team picked up a key road win, 59-49, at LaGrange on Tuesday night as head coach Jamie Purdy picked up her 300th career collegiate victory.
The Lady Lions (9-8, 5-3 USA South) fell behind early in the contest, but took the lead late in the first quarter and led for much of the way to claim the season sweep over the Panthers.
EMILY WILEY (20) and
AMARI PRICE (16) were the only Lady Lions in double figures, combining for 36 of the team's 59 points. Price also dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds.
It was a slow start to the first quarter for the Lady Lions, as the Panthers raced out to a quick 10-2 lead over the first 2:07. However, PC roared back with a 15-5 run over the final 5:10 of the period, eventually tying the score on Wiley's second three-pointer.
Neither team led by more than one possession in a low-scoring second quarter. Price scored Piedmont's final seven points of the half to give the team a 26-25 edge at the break.
Both teams picked up their offensive output in the third quarter, but PC led the entire period to take a 46-42 lead into the final 10 minutes.
With a four-point lead going into the final quarter, the Lady Lions stifled the LaGrange offense, holding it to just seven points in the fourth quarter. Four early points from senior
RAEGINE NEWKIRK gave Piedmont a game-high 10-point lead.
From there, PC led by at least seven points the rest of the way and put the game away at the free throw line.
Up next, the Lady Lions will travel to Decatur to battle Agnes Scott on Friday, Jan. 17 at.6 p.m.
