LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's lacrosse team lost 15-12 to Averett University on Friday afternoon in the USA South Athletic Conference semifinals to conclude its 2019 season.
EMMA FRANSEN and
ROWAN BUMPASS each had four goals in the loss while
CASSIDY HEFLIN scored three goals and had nine draw controls and three ground balls.
Leading 10-9 with 20:28 left to play, the Cougars (14-4) scored three unanswered goals to pull ahead by four. Averett would hold its lead and led 15-10 with eight minutes remaining.
Heflin scored with 1:23 left before Bumpass pulled Piedmont (10-8) within three with 56 seconds left. The Lady Lions had a chance late, but Averett was able to hold strong to close out the game.
The Cougars scored the game's first goal in the opening two minutes into the Friday's contest before
MACEY HIGGINS tied the game at 27:52. Averett added a pair of goals, but Piedmont used a 4-1 run with goals from Bumpass and Fransen to take a 5-4 lead.
Averett then scored three straight to take its final lead of the game to lead 7-5. Heflin scored with 1:35 before halftime to put Piedmont behind by one goal.
Fransen tied the game at 26:05 in the second half, but Averett answered with two goals. Both teams would trade goals, but Averett scored thee to build a 13-9 lead with 15:59 remaining.
Offensively, Piedmont was held to 16 shots on the day while Averett had 34.
MATTIE KEATON had eight saves in her final game as a Lady Lion.
