LaGRANGE, Ga. – The No. 12 Piedmont College baseball team had its bats silenced in a 7-2 game one loss to Covenant at the USA South Tournament in LaGrange, Georgia.
 
After being swept by the Lions (29-9) in the regular season, the Scots (17-20) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the third inning and never looked back on their way to the 7-2 victory.
 
Covenant starting pitcher Andrew Cline fired a complete game, allowing just two runs to the potent PC offense.
 
The Scots loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the second and cashed in with a three-run inning thanks to three hits and a pair of Piedmont errors.
 
Covenant was able to add to its lead with two more runs off Piedmont starter SAM CARPENTER in the third off three more base hits.
 
From there, Carpenter settled in, not allowing a run over his final four frames.
 
However, after the Lions finally broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut their deficit to 5-2, the Scots got those two runs right back in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to five once again.
 
The loss marks just the third time all season that PC has been held to two runs or less.
 
Up next, the Lions will face elimination when they take on Huntingdon tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at West Point Field on the campus of Point University. If they were to advance, they would then play at Cleaveland Field in LaGrange at 8 p.m.
 
TURNING POINT:
- The three-run top of the second for the Scots proved to be all that starting pitcher Andrew Cline needed, as he pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Piedmont's seven base hits were spread out, as no one recorded more than one. However, TYLER SHELEY's RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh put PC on the scoreboard.
